Art History and photography.
Art history is the discipline we use to retell the story artists put in their paintings. They all have a secret code or language which informs the viewer of their meaning. This language is called iconography. For example, a lit candle could emphases the holy spirit being present. This is relevant particularly in religious paintings.
Colours tell a story too depending on where they are. Red for example used by the Russian artists known as The Constructivists means Socialist principles are being conveyed. The white is a reference to the white Russians or forces who supported the Tsar.
This is also the case in photography. Photographers use the language of visual images to tell a narrative. In the Renaissance, artists created a genre called Vanitas Paintings which saw images such as lutes, bottles of wine, fruits and human skulls all on a table. The message here is while man collects material wealth and parties, death is always near stalking them. A cheery lot eh!
Photographers now use similar ideas doing studio still life. Objects which are placed and arranged in a certain way. This could tell a story to the viewer. From what I have learned about photography, art has played a huge part in influencing this discipline.
